22 Cal. Rifle Metallic Silhouettes
There are many variations of Metallic Silhouette shooting in existence today, but they all have one thing in common: steel targets in shapes of game animals placed at varying distances from the shooter.
All shooting is done offhand without slings or shooting jackets. Usually the
shooter has a spotter to advise on where the shot hit.
The shooter is given 2-1/2 minutes to engage a bay (row) of five silhouettes (five chickens, five pigs,
five turkeys, or five sheep, one shot each target, shooting left to right). Scoring is equally simple;
if your shot knocks the target completely off it's stand, it's a hit. Anything else is a miss. Then move
on to the next silhouette in the bay.
When the shooter has finished the first string of five targets, the targets are reset and a second string of five targets (of the same animal) is engaged. A match consists of ten gallina (chicken) targets at 40 yards, ten javelina (pig) targets at 60 yards, ten guajalote (turkey) targets at 77 yards, ten borrego (sheep) targets at 100 yards and has a maximum score of 40 points. The object of the competition is to knock over as many targets as you can, using only one shot per target, shooting in the prescribed sequence, within the prescribed time. The course may be laid out in yards or meters.
Shooters may compete in either (or both) of two rifle classes: Small-bore Silhouette Rifle or Small-bore Hunting Silhouette Rifle. A Small-bore Silhouette Rifle cannot weigh more than 10.2 lbs including the scope and mounts and can be a custom built rifle. A Small-bore Hunting Silhouette Rifle must weigh 8 1/2 lbs or less including scope, mounts and magazine and must be an “off-the-rack rifle” or near to one (e.g., original stock, or a very close reproduction thereof, and the original trigger set at a minimum of 2 lbs). And yes, most shooters use scopes, usually in the range of 10x-36x, but any scope may be used. These scopes usually have parallax adjustments and target knobs.
This is the sport for shooters who want immediate gratification. There is no waiting to see and score your target as in competitions involving paper. The entire family can participate in this shooting sport since nearly any 22 cal. rifle can be used. And it is a relatively inexpensive shooting game as the ammunition is cheap, and no specialized equipment is required. Great fun and training for your kids or grandkids.
The course of fire begins with the Range Officer’s command of “Ready”. At this time the shooter has 15 seconds of preparation time and may dry fire his rifle or load his rifle in anticipation of the command “Fire”. Following the Fire command the shooter has 2 1/2 minutes to fire five shots at his bank of targets. A hit results in a resounding clang and a metal target toppling from it's stand. A miss, and only a puff of dirt kicks up behind the target. Competitors and spectators alike can view the action and share in the results!
Ammunition is limited to standard velocity 22 caliber rim fire, short, long or long rifle ammunition. NO 22 Magnums or Hot Loads” such as “Stingers” may be used. This restriction is to prevent damage to the targets.
The range which is under construction at this time should be completed in June or July. The opening of the new range is dependent upon volunteer labor and available funding. A training course will be offered to the DNGC membership and upon completion of the course members will be issued a key to the storage trailer which will give them access to the silhouette targets for practice.
